left out of here for the office. At the pharmacy I bought myself a 6/49 quick pick for Saturdays draw and up to the office. I collected a ton of empties and got #!5 and Super didn’t move me. I settled in with a coffee. Fortunately I didn’t have anyone beside me. I do better that way. In my first sale I got a $50 Cc sale which helped. I think I had maybe $195 by break. I got more empties and had somebody sit beside me in the empty chair. Super had to reset the taps and we had an extra 5 minutes off. By break I had 2 CC sales. I did alright in the 2nd half as well pulling in 2 more CC sales for 4 on the night and $400 by the end of the night. I left out of there in the rain. Yes finally we got some rain. This in itself was amazing. Crossing the parkade there I could feel my bsl dropping and I needed to get something sweet. I went into Tim’s to get a Boston cream donut. That helped. There were extra cars on the train heading home because of the Eskimo game and at Stadium, I got the hoard of Esk fans. Anne was waiting for me at home cooking some parmesan chicken. Very nice. I watched the news and at midnight got to my computer and here I am.
Over the last few hours I’ve been doing some piano theory and got the proper chord arrangements to play “Happy birthday.” I went to several sites and they all play this song the same way. Also, I learned how to build the 4 basic chord groups the right way. I used to think Major chords were 4+3 half steps not counting the root but actually its 5+4 counting the root. The root is always counted even when doing minor chords, Diminished and Augmented Chords. This is Grade 1 stuff but its easy to commit to memory.
l get my pay cheque tonight (even though bm had them yesterday. They’re trying to prevent the staff from cashing them in on Thursday so they’ll have a full house on Friday nights. It makes sense but “mangers” get their cheques Thursdays of course. I miss getting my cheque Thursdays because it means I’ve got a lot of extra running around to do on a Friday night. Anne said I can have the $20 to take into work with me so I can get my book after work and then go to cash my cheque. I’d like to do that every Friday. Or get a new job.
The real estate board or whatever they’re called stated that the recession (at least here in Edmonton) is over. Yeah it may be over but there’s the recover aspect of it that’s just as hard if not harder then the actual recession itself to recover from. The real estate board is saying this because of all the home sales late that have jumped to new records this year. More homes were sold here in Edmonton then at any other time in the last several years. If people have money to buy homes that means they’ve got money from jobs. But the numbers don’t lie. Or do they? Yes homes are being bought in record numbers but here in Edmonton we’re still sitting at an unemployment rate of 6.6%. Oil has fallen in price from $70 as of last Friday now down to $66. There’s lots of oil left in storage. Here in Alberta there are fewer wells dug then ever before and because of the new royalty structure companies are moving to BC and Saskatchewan. Event though last week The province announced an extension of $1.5B royalty breaks to the oil and gas industry. Apparently for every 100 wells drilled employs 15,000 people. The royalty scheme announced last year took affect January 1st and it’s having an impact on the economy here. Also this week The province had put together a think tank of notable Albertans on how to diversify our economy. Interesting times.
Last night before break Spike TV had the original Star Wars movie “A new hope.” I got to see bits and pieces of it in between calls. I especially like the briefing scene before they go to the death star. My favorite movie of all time. Also reminds me of the 8 or so “New Jedi Order” books I have on hold for me at Audrey’s. After I get the rest of this series I’m going to focus on Star Wars “Legacy.”
Anyway gang, that’s about all for now.

what with watching all of the Unrestricted Free Agent moves in the NHL. Out goes Roli and in comes Nikolai Khabibulin. The Dany Heatley soap opera continues. I think Tambi and Lowe are running out of patience with this guy. I say wash our hands with him already. Lets go after Antropov.
Anne’s almost on her way home from a grueling 7 hour shift. I hope she was able to see a little of the Canada Day fireworks celebrations from her position on the 17th floor of her building. I saw about a 20 second clip of the fireworks from Global news.
My 6/49 numbers didn’t come in but that’s almost to be expected. The payout was $3,522,241.00. Nobody won the jackpot this evening so it goes to about $8M Saturday. I’m buying my ticket tonight for Saturday. No extra of course.
Tonight it’s into the job for my 4 hours. I’ve got 2 more days and Friday night I’m off to get a book at Audrey’s and then I get 2 days off…..1:05pm>
My wife is a little upset when she went to pay the rent earlier. The caretaker walked towards Anne pointing a finger saying for her not to feed the birds around here because it’s attracting squirrels that come out this time of year. It’s got nothing to do with my wife. This caretaker, she’s a nut case. Apparently the caretaker is pissed of the squirrels that jump the trees and land on the roof. It’s nature lady, they come out this time of year. If they tamper with the trees out here then it’s time to move. I think that’s what they are looking at doing. One of the best things that could happen to us is if we get to win the 6/49 jackpot and or rental subsidy. Rental subsidy will come first before the other thing does. If we get subsidy then we can take our leave of this place, find something better and get the hell away from that nut case woman. They don’t like us because our 2 bedroom apartment is about $45 cheaper then the others of its class but when the rent goes up in October, most likely we’ll be paying a lot more. That means I’ll have to work extra hours. I don’t mind putting the extra hours in but not at the job I’m currently at.
Something weird, piano playing wise. I’ve got a song here called “Another year older.” Otherwise known as “Happy birthday to you.” its nit a difficult piece but the sheet music I have the piece starts on the left hand. Every tutorial on YouTube shows the piece starting on the right hand. In the “Another year older” version of this song, there is a stretch from the A-B that makes the piece seem awkward. In “Happy birthday,” with the left hand all the finger positions are covered by the notes. The Happy birthday version seems cleaner to me. It’s the same tune just a different hand positions. I’m going to stick with the right hand. Makes more sense to me. This is basically grade 1 piano.
And finally, last night on Coast they had a killer of a show with Jim Marrs talking about UFO’s, JFK all kinds of great stuff but unfortunately (the good stuff) was on from about 1-3am. We missed it when we went to bed and they start off with open lines the first hour. Well, I’m off to read some more of “ICB” after I post this.
Anyway gang, that’s about all for now.

today but since it's Canada Day, I get a day off in the middle of the week. Yesterday I headed out of here at my usual time I got my 6/49 ticket and headed upstairs and got all my empties and dialer #15. Super didn't have anyone in the back so we had more or less a full room. I was settled in ready to do CWF but we all ended up doing CPA. I couldn't believe how good I did during the first half with just over line hour and 2 CC's. In the 2nd half I got it done with around $650 and 2 more cards. I was glad to get a few more empties and feeling pretty good leaving out of here.
My wife was off last night treating herself to see "Hanna Montana the movie." I was able to read a bit on the way home and felt good I have a day off durring NHL UFA day. Sweet. I was home for awhile when she came in and for supper she made us a bacon and tomato grill cheese sandwich and cream of potato soup. Great. I composed this from earlier. I didn't get a chance to post this, so here goes.
I can’t believe how fast this summer season has gone by. It was 2 months ago that Robert J. Sawyer was here and we got that dumping of wet snow. I remember that night so well meeting the guys from the office after RJS left. I was in Tim’s getting a decaf coffee when they said nobody got their cheques that night because they were all blank. Yes, a day off tomorrow! July 1st also means NHL UFA day. Could the Oilers be getting Marian Gaborik maybe? I don’t know if the $5M asking price is too much already. I’d rather get the Sedin’s for $7M. I’m keeping my ears to the radio tomorrow that’s for sure. The Oilers need to get a big scoring name. Two would be better but the Oilers don’t have the cap room. I’d love to see the Oilers get Gaborik and Mike Cammalleri. But management would have to get really creative. If they do nothing, this UFA round the Oilers will be same like last year, even with Pat Quinn. No disrespect to Quinn when Craig MacTavish left but The Who sang it best as far as that’s concerned: “Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.” The Oilers score about 230 goals/year in the regular season and that’s not enough to make the playoffs. According to NHL. Com stats the Oilers for example generated 2303 shots on goal in the regular season last year (’08 ‘09) for a total of 228 goals. Calgary Flames by comparison had 2643 shots on goal for 251 goals. Goals don’t always tell the whole story but its really defense that win games. That’s why the Oilers need to keep Roli and their current roster and maybe add a Gaborik and a Cammalleri. That’s why the next couple of days are so exciting for NHL fans.
We’ve been having some big changes in the office due to the economic slowdown at my job this year. Firstly there was the cancellation of the morning shift, no recaps and getting our cheques on Fridays now instead of Thursdays. Not to mention the change I made from opting out Saturdays for Sundays. I was expecting this recession to happen in February of ‘08. I knew last February we would be in a recession by the fall of ‘08. Hard to believe that we are in a recession here in Alberta with oil sitting around $70/barrel.
Recently added to my list of links right under SF Signal is a site I recently discovered: Ray Gun Revival. This site dishes up weekly doses of space opera goodness of my favorite genre in Science Fiction. But I can’t for the life of me figure out what Edgar Rice Burroughs has to do with space opera. I haven’t read his John Carter yet but for a writer that wrote adventure SFF I would hardly call that space opera. Peter F. Hamilton, now that’s space opera! Still if you like space opera as much as I do, this site deserves your attention.
Other then that not a lot going on. Anne’s off to go out and get our bus passes for the month of July. I’m glad we get tax breaks for these things but I’m not sure by how much. The only way to find out I guess is by not claiming them one year and claim them the next and compare the two tax refund returns to see any differences. Even then that wont give me the whole picture.
Anyway gang, that’s about it for now…..

Ugh. I’m just waking up here. I had this weird dream that I was in this Science Fiction/Horror crossover movie. They were using my image from my blog to talk in real time. Anne and I looked at each other. The scene unfolded as the computer image said “We will compensate Jim Shannon for the use of his image from his website at E. Jim Shannon. com if he calls the studios at…..” The scene featured a major part of the movie with my image playing a huge role. Then I abruptly woke. What’s weird about that scene is that Anne and I rarely go to movies much less horror movies. Anne watches them but I don’t. I like some of the traditional stuff but that’s about all.
I’m Blogging in HTML these days in case you may have noticed a bit of a change in font style around here. Once I understand how Blockquotes are made I’ll be inserting those once in a while to dress up this blog a little. I’m not an expert or an advanced user of HTML or CSS. I want to try and make the Blog/site a little more professional looking.
This afternoon in about an hour I’ll be out there catching my bus to work. Its only 4 hours. But the best part is I’m going to get my book (Kate Elliott’s “Crown of Stars” book 3) at Audrey’s before heading over to the office at 2pm. There’ll be lots of empties for me to collect I’ll gather up those and I’ll get my dialer #15 and have a coffee. The first 2 hours go by really fast. We usually have a good crew on Sunday’s. The 2nd half is a struggle but I am comforted by the knowledge that in 2 hours I’m out of there and on my way home.
I had to hurry a bit there shortly after 12:45pm. As usual the wind was very strong and gusting. I had a wait for my train which allowed me the time to read on the way to Corona station. It was 1:30pm when I got inside Audrey’s and I picked up my Kate Elliott “Crown of Stars Volume 3” book. It was a bit more expensive then the others at $12.99. I hurried over to work and nobody was outside to meet me since they lock up the front doors on Sunday and after 6pm on Saturdays. Greg came down and let me and one more up. I got a good haul of empties and dialer #15, a headset and I was ready to go. JT showed up with some of Team India. Danny was already there when I got up. We had 6 tap shooters and I think they had maybe 4 on the cold side. All together there were about 10 of us. I had my pizza at break at 4pm and some more empties. I ended up with $580 and 1 $25 CC sale doing CPA. I was lucky I got a $100 sale from the “big taps.” I got the last of the empties for a pretty good haul heading home. I read waiting for the train and read on the way back. I got in about 6:45pm as Anne was sleeping not feeling well. She’s up now watching the Michael Jackson thing unfolding.
As for me, I’m going to read until supper/breakfast which is going to be around 11pm tonight. I want to read as much as I can after this.
Anyway gang, that’s about it for now…..

I left out of here about 3:45pm in very windy conditions and like everyone else waiting for the autopsy news report on Michael Jackson. I picked up my 6/49 ticket at the pharmacy, as it was still very windy out there. I didn’t get any news about MJ until I went into the office. No foul play. I got a lot of empties and DC handed me my cheque. Everything right except the missing 1 hour but that’s alright. I sat at station #15 hoping Super wouldn’t move me. “James, in the back.” Disappointment. I got an end dialer and sat with one of the newer people. I had nothing for almost half an hour then I got a $100 and a $50 and I was at line hour by 6pm. Then almost nothing after that until about 6pm I had $265. I collected more empties during the break and within the finale 20 minutes Super moves me to station #15, Finally it was all over and I ended up with $320 and no cards but I got 10 on the week.
I was glad to get out of there even though the wind was still gusting. I waited for the bus just beside Tim’s feeling bad I didn’t have cash to get my Friday book. Joan one of our staff that’s in crutches met up with me saying she was in at 4pm. Once when I begin steady hours I’m going to ask bm if I can come in during the afternoon say around 1-2pm and get my cheque. This way I’ll be able to do my banking early and I can still go to Audrey’s for my Friday night.
I had kind of a scary incident at the bank. Thank God I have over draft protection. I deposit my cheque and in the envelope and the ATM spit out my balance. It’s the same banking ritual I do every Friday. The cheque didn’t show on the news balance slip and the money didn’t come out. I began to panic. I thought I lost my cheque! These are new ATM’s and this is the first time this has ever happened to me. So I put my card in again and punched a button in the amount and I heard the machine cycle through and it spit the cash out for me and generated a new balance slip. Every ATM is different but in most cases works the same. When I do a deposit a box pops up on the screen with a field to enter specific amounts for deposits and withdraws. I have to enter the amounts manually using the touch pad and decimal key. There are also buttons on the side with graphics showing option amounts that can be drawn when a withdraw request is made. I picked the last button and I got my cash out. The balance was the same. I don’t like that machine. The last thing I want to do is lose a 6/49 jackpot that way. Something went wrong when I entered the amount. The bank room where the ATM’s are held gets a steady flow of customers. I suggested this fellow not use the same ATM. He did his banking and I showed him my 3 slips. He thanked me for the heads up on that machine.
I left out of there feeling alright but I missed my train just leaving as I was halfway down the stairs. If I had left when I did I would have been home earlier. But I didn’t mind waiting at Central and read. I had a can of diet pop and a good book to read. I was feeling a bit more relaxed. I had a quiet ride to Clairview with my bag of empties and my book and I got home about 9:50pm. My usual time.
I wasn’t in the mood to watch Smackdown. I did some computer work instead and had my supper, which Anne made for me earlier. I enjoyed that and watched the news and then went to Smackdown’s main Event. After that I did some more computer work. Anne came home saying she got a tote bag and a hot cold thermos thing plus $5 off her next pizza order for putting through the most pizza “Mega meal” orders. She’s always winning things like that. I get bonus money on my cheques occasionally and she gets little performance gifts and things. She got me that Best Buy coupon which I Haven’t cashed in yet but I will next weekend. The nearest Best Buy to us is the one on the other side of 137th Ave. it’s several bus rides away and takes a whole afternoon to get out there. I’ll most likely go next Saturday and get a game and I can if I leave early enough get a few books on the way home. A video game, books a bite to eat. That’s a nice outing for me.
Speaking of video games, I Haven’t been playing Oblivion for some time. Mainly because the controller needs new batteries. Most likely I’ll get to playing it again possibly next weekend. I’m not a big video game player but I don’t mind spending a few hours a week on my little Xbox 360.
It’s a beautiful summer day out there and I’m glad I was able to sleep in and I’m not on the phones getting TD’d and F3 out the ying yang. I got up around noon as Anne went out the door with her shopping cart and I’m by myself doing my thing. She’s got a 4 hour shift today and a bank appointment for Monday or Tuesday so we can get part of our rent and she’s got her vacation pay coming in and her cheque. We’ll be a few days late but we can always give the office a post dated cheque for July 3rd. I also have enough here for July’s bus pass as well.
So far year to date, I’ve gotten $630 in bonus money over the last 28 weeks or so. Some of the guys during the afternoon shift are pulling in $100+/ week in bonus money over and above their pay cheques. Going in from 1-9 is worth it. I may as well get on that shift while I can before this DNC list wipes out the afternoon shift. I think this is going to go next. Pretty soon we’ll just have the evening shift. But they still have the business room and that seems to be going strong. They’ve got close to 32 stations running from 9-4pm but nobody likes the business room manager as she takes all the better taps for herself. Also, “team India” works business on the other side of the morning tap crew. I think if HO is going to do any more cutbacks, it’s going to be the morning shift. People from the morning crew are gradually moving to afternoons/evenings. The other option for them is business. When they cut the morning tap shooters then the room will be full coast to coast.
That’s enough business talk for right now. My friend Keith Graham is doing a John Brunner novel reading project lately. You can check out how he’s doing on his Blog. Cant say I’ve ever read Brunner but after some looking around he had quite a body of work. He published over 60 novels in his career. Sadly, most of these editions are long out of print but they can be picked up at Ebay as vintage books. The condition of these books aren’t pretty but they are readable. I wonder if any publisher has scanned these books and is going to republish them? I’d like to try a John Brunner book. One fatal flaw about science fiction is its ideas can become dated but the stories are timeless.
And finally in i09 today they have an interesting post on Science Fiction books that launched their own careers. For example, Military Science Fiction. The post talks about the origins of the sub genre and its believed that HG Wells first brought military SF to the light of day but Robert E. Heinlein with his book “Starship troopers” kind of brought this sub genre towards popularity. When I think of military Science Fiction I think David Webber.
Anne’s running a bit late here as she has to be at work by 4pm if she wants to make us a bite to eat she should be pulling up pretty soon. Speak of the devil.
This weekend is the NHL draft and sure enough NYI took their expected pick and same with Tampa bay. The Oiler’s took 10th overall and the kid has another year to go where he’s currently playing. The draft was a real let down for the Oiler’s. Lets hope something good will come out of the UFA offerings next week. There’s some big names out there. I’d like to see the Oiler’s get Jay Bouwmeester but at almost $5M/year is he worth it? The Oiler’s however haven’t the cap room to sign these big name players. They let Kyle Brodziak got to the Wild for a 99th round draft pick so that will clear some cap space. Brodziak was only getting half a mil but obviously the Oiler’s are trying to create cap space. They could get rid of Nilson for $2M> I wouldn’t miss him. The thing is a lot of teams don’t have cap space for these big names and even though cap space this year is at $56M, next year it could drop to $50M
Anyway gang, that’s about it for now…..

The other thing that disturbs me about the Michael Jackson event yesterday is that both Joe Strummer and Michael Jackson died at home and both died at the age of 50 and of heart related deaths. That in itself is interesting.
Yesterday marks another anniversary for me in that it was 29 years ago yesterday I left the Meyer place. It was a real ugly scene when I left but I had a cab waiting and my bags packed trying to avoid Mr. Meyer sneaking out the door in that hot June sun after work. Unfortunatly I encountered him and he tried to detain me but I barged my way past him and out to the cab. I still have a copy of the letter I wrote him. By 5:30pm that afternoon I was in my new place never to see Mr. Meyer again!
Ok onto other things. Tonight I'm off to do the job thing again. Good news is I'll get my pay cheaque and then I have all day Saturday off. >I'm still reading "In Conquest born." This is science fiction at it's best folks. I'm enjoying it so much that I'm heading right on into its sequel, "The Wilding." There's so much good writing here. I've read a lot of SFF in my 56 years, since reading it in 1970 and C.S. Friedman deserves to be within the top 10 of my all time favorite authors. Who needs TV when there's so much good books to read. This time last year the Nisku yards just outside of Edmonton were bustling with activity. There were about 50,000 workers on the site where as today there is something like 10,000. In a surprise move the Province is giving over a billion dollars in tax breaks to get the oil and insdustry moving here again. nobody knows right now what if any short term affect it will have but lets hope it's positive.

From last night: I went into the pharmacy to grab a candy bar and upstairs to the back where the guys were. They got more pop cans for me. Super gave us tap shooters about 8 of us a lecture pep talk wanting $1,000 each from all of us. He’s right we’re not using our rebottles. I ended up getting $110 and he called Dave and I in and gave us each an admonishing talking to. Super was right though about a lot of things I wasn’t doing. But in the 2nd half he moved me over to small taps and I was doing a lot better. I got 1 CC sale and $465. I was spinning my wheels doing Ontario. We all were. I’d say about 80% of my calls were not home. The few calls that I actually received that is. If Super would have left me with the small taps I would have done a lot better. But were they ever piling on the stress last night. I felt better leaving out of there then I started and I got a whack of empties. I was joined by a whole bunch of the new tap shooters at Corona station but I got the other train separating myself from them. I wasn’t trying to be anti social, I was just exhausted.
Anne was doing her vacuuming and I got a glass of cola and did my stuff until the news. We had a nice BBQ pork chop dinner and after that I’m on the computer unwinding.
LCROSS is into its 2nd phase of its lunar mission to probe the moon and to eventually crash land onto the lunar surface in October. When it crash lands on the moon it’s supposed to create a crater about 5 miles long and a plum of dust almost 6 miles tall. A second probe will fly through the dust plum to scan for water. They were talking about this on Coast to Coast in the first hour of the show. It’s an interesting mission. There’s a lot of theories about the moon. Some would suggest because the moon is almost perfectly round (except for craters) it could be an artificial stellar body. Others might suggest like Richard C. Hoagland the moon was once inhabited by an alien civilization still there. Others believe a human civilization abandoned a base still there on the moon from an earlier civilization on earth long before our own that existed millions of years ago. Since the earth is over 4 Billion years old, anything is possible. The previous human civilization might have occurred around a million years ago. Since humanity (depending on who you talk with) began some 250,000 years ago long after the age of the dinosaurs its interlay possible that other human civilizations could have evolved without a record of them here o n earth a dozen times over since the last of the dinosaurs which became extinct some 65 million years ago. Yes I know it reads like cheesy science fiction. But consider 500,000 years can be divided about 426 times into 65 million years. Consider that our own civilization began some 250,000 years ago. Will our own civilization as we know it come to an end somehow? Hard to say. But when LCROSS completes its mission we may find crystallized water under the lunar surface. Will we find something else?
I didn’t win the 6/49 $15M but it was split up by 2 winners each winning
$7,532,978.00. Nice. And again #19 had been drawn. This makes it 4 times in a row. From now on I’m buying only 1 ticket/week every Saturday at Superstore…………….1:15pm> It’s back to the job thing today. The DOW climbed by 172 points closing at just under 8,500 from losing about 500 points from last week. The Dow is fluctuating from 8.2-8.8 and I think will be like this until the end of the year. Oil is back up to $70. I’m just glad I have 2 more days left and I’m off Saturday.
SF Signal is showing off 2 covers and highlights from the new issue of Analog and Asimov. Both are in digest forms but I think there’s more bang for your buck if you like short stories. Analog has only 2 while Asimov has 5.
At about $3 an issue, I’d rather read SFF anthologies or online. But Asimov seems at a glance to be the better of the 2.…………..10:20pm> I was just finishing dinner about 3:30pm when the news broke about Michael Jackson being rushed to the hospital having a heart attack. Anne and I had an explosion earlier as everyone was trying to get out at the same time. I left feeling stressed out and I got to the office. Not many empties there for me. When I got inside there was a CNN report that Michael Jackson died of a heart attack. WTF? Did I read that right? That was a shocker. I’m still trying to process the news. I was never a huge fan of Michael Jackson but I admired his talent and the fact that in the face of the band wagon rap jumping, Jackson never sold out and did a rap album. He kept true to his music. Good for him. But hearing this, wow. It’s amazing how some of us remember the important events of history and we remember where we were when certain events happened. For example, I was in a classroom at Miller Park school when JFK was assassinated. I was in North Vancouver at a poolside home that summer when Elvis died. I was in Riverdale flats near the low level bridge in the living room alone when I heard the news about John Lennon. I was watching the Oiler’s first ever Stanley Cup win in Trudy’s rental house in a basement room and at work when Wayne Gretzky was traded. I was coming into the office when I heard people talk about 9/11 at our 115th street and Jasper Ave. location. I recall where I was when princess Diana died in 1997. And I’ll always will remember where I was when I heard the news about Joe Strummer of the Clash. He also died from heart failure at the age of 50 December 2002 and now even though you can’t compare Joe Strummer and Michael Jackson but I’ll always remember hearing about the passing of Michael Jackson and where I was. I had dialer #15 watching the news on Michael Jackson and then Super asked me to take #14. I did and I had I think about $110 and a $50 CC. Then I got moved to the back end doing Ontario CPA taps. Lucky me. I had a CC sale and was about to be moved and it was the 2nd CC sale that saved me. I ended up doing $565 and my last sale was $100. I got the last of the empties and headed over to my train and read and got a seat to myself and came home to have Anne cooking dinner. Not only that but this week the world lost Ed McMahon and also today Farrah Fawcett lost her battle with cancer. It's been a rough week in the entertainmanet world.
What a day
Jim
