A full day yesterday |

I also had this weird dream that Audrey’s books was moving to another location in the downtown core. There was something about how they have this boxed record collection occupying a shelf that has been sitting there for like 35 years. In my dream I went to investigate the vinyl and the albums were all warped over the years through shelf life, basement store humidity and poor maintenance. This was a weird dream. Back to reality: This dream sort of reminded me of the time when I was working at the Great West Sadlery building (Great West) 1978. I’d been working there for a few months and we were condensing space getting ready for a shipment. I can’t recall what floor this was on but I noticed some old wrapping paper behind the wall. I pulled it out and I found two oversized record platters of The Shadow. They were in mint condition. Who knows how long they were sitting there. (Sam Warhaft my boss) didn’t know they were there and he was warehouse manager for many years before I showed up. I think Great West was a warehouse for Army & Navy back in the 50’s. Sam was in his 60’s even at this time and this was before I quite the first time to pursue other employment options. I wanted to take advantage of the worker shortage we had back during the first oil boom. So I had these huge records about the size of an extra large pizza box I didn’t know what to do with. At this time 1978 we only had one FM radio station (to my knowledge) and that wasn’t even an FM radio station. 630Ched (voice of the Edmonton Oilers) had an FM format show from I think 9-midnight. They were playing the new rock n’ roll. Punk and New wave and even other more mainstream bands like Supertramp and Queen. Music of the day. The format show was called K97. Today K97 is it’s own true FM radio station and I listen to “Krock” quite frequently, on the commute home at night. Since I can’t get am radio on my MP3 player. 630Ched meanwhile had its headquarters above the old Henry Singer building (a billboard sign saying k97 roosted on the building roof for many years, it might still be there.) across the street from the old Cecil Hotel location. I’m wondering now that I think back to those days if Ched kept a floor if not maybe their station at one time in the old Great West building. Maybe it was on this floor Ched kept its record collection. Ched also is the only station in Edmonton playing Old Time Radio (OTR). Shows like The Shadow etc. I still didn’t know what to do with the records I had back then. I think I donated them to Hobbits Fantasy shop because Carmine was into OTR. He had as a sideline business a catalogue of those old radio shows like The Shadow, Green Hornet, Let George do it, Richard Diamond, and many more on cassette tape. I think I might have a few of them around buried in my rat’s nest somewhere. The memory above surfaced out of the dream I had about Audrey’s books and the record collection.
Speaking about radio here in Edmonton, we have more radio stations here per capita then any radio station in Canada. Last time I checked we have 8 am stations and 18 FM stations. K97 is 97.3 on the FM dial. Not to mention cable and satellite radio and even online radio. There’s a lot of radio out there. According to the unofficial Ched site, Ched went on the air 1954. Two years after I was born.
Day 3 of the NHL draft is underway and the Oilers have yet to make any blockbuster trades but the ufa market doesn’t begin until July 1st, anything can happen between now and then. The Oilers need to get some marquee players, possibly at least 2 of them. If they don’t then this year will be much like the last year. The Oilers might make the playoffs but unless they get some marquee players then their line up is going to be much the same as last year and I’m afraid so will the results in this post Oiler Ryan Smyth era. Without those marquee type players we’re could be going back to the, ho hum days of 1993 Oiler hockey.
I worked on F all Sunday afternoon and spotted some glowing errors that I corrected. A few more scenes and I’ll be at the half waypoint of the first rewrite. I’m inserting a lot of cause and effect material and tightening up foreshadowing. I hope to have the first rewrite done by the end of this month. The second rewrite by the end of July, the third rewrite by the end of August. With any luck at all this will go to market January 1st 2008. I also hope to have enough material for my 2nd novel, IBA by January and by the Spring I hope to have all my material organized and outlined for my space opera trilogy.
That's all for now
e. Jim.
