An October Tuesday |
|
I went into work with my wife and she bought my bus pass at the Ready mart, lower concourse and we went into work together. I got in and Gary sat beside me. We ended up doing Magic for the first night and surprisingly I did really well. I tried calling Charles but he was at a friends place. He called me back around 6:30ish and we agreed to meet instead at Tim’s on Thursday. He’s doing afternoons so we’ll meet at 4pm. I can go in shortly behind Anne and meet him there for a coffee. Then after that I an head to the lodge. So, I’ll be going in wearing my suit and I can leave around 5pm there for back home and change. I can do that instead. Anyway Anne didn’t call me at her break. I ended up with top total at $815 plus 5 credit cards for a total of $185 in credit cards alone. And I got a $10 bonus. I called Anne and she said how she’s just getting out and she could meet me at Corona station. Ok. I waited with some of the staff at Corona and the train came a bit early. WTF? Ok still waiting for Anne, I waited behind for the University train. Anne didn’t get off. This told me she most likely caught the train I should been on. My train came at 9:20pm and I called Anne as she was on the bus home. We just missed our connections is all. Got our wires crossed and the fact that ETS seemed to have changed their scheduling around. Anne didn’t seem to mind. She wanted me to look at the moon this evening when I got to the end of the train get off at the front and walk towards the ramp. I got their with her on the phone and looked down the rest of the track and the moon hung really low in the sky. It was a bright orange. A bit darker then the orange on my website. Really nice because the air was mild out there tonight. Still is.
I decided to walk home instead with Anne talking me along the way as I was huffing and puffing. I had a pretty good night this evening. So did Anne it seems. When I got in I watched Raw. I enjoyed the show tonight. A bit predictable near the end of course. On a scale from 1-10, I’d rate the show about a 6.5.
That leads me to here. All in all I had a great evening. Tomorrow I’m going to place a book order for special orders. I want to order: The opium of the people/J. Alen Erwine (if Audrey's can order it.) and Ben Bova's "Asteroid Wars" (just in case J's book isn't availibile by special in store order.) and one more stand alone. I'm going to place my order next week. I hope. That's my books for October.
Also Saturday I gave Markus URL’s to all the static pages I have for all menu’s. So now he’s got something of everything and still he isn’t doing anything on my website. The menus work from About me/Blog/Science Fiction/Archives. Miscellaneous is incorrectly placed. I asked him about a half dozen times now if he could move that just after “My philosophy” and in between the “Friends” menu. I have asked him to remove the two items in “Miscellaneous” to their proper position within “My philosophy.” I have submitted URL’s for static pages to go within Miscellaneous.” I have provided him with a URL for even “Friends.” So far nothing is happening. He’s got everything he requested from me to make these menus work and still nothing is being done. All this to get my theme changed. I’ve done everything I can from this end so I suppose I’m left with this dull ugly looking website. I think I’m going to have to save up some cash and get this done professionally. Locally and then I’ll submit it to Markus for hosting. I mean it's not like he's commited to provide me one on one help or anything. But there's not much more I can do with this site I’m afraid, so I'll leave it there. Also, I’m going to put 2 more links up this week, Coast to Coast and Amazon.ca.
I worked on another scene for F completing more or less scene #18. I asked Charles if he works from an outline or just flies by the seat of his pants when writing. He says he doesn’t work from an outline. I like to know where I’m going in the novel as much as possible but I can make changes along the way when something arises. I also use something I’ve learned from every novel I read. I take down little notes and interpret them in a slightly different way making them my own. Using my own voice on them. Charles says he doesn’t work that way. Not that there’s anything wrong with it but and I’m taking from that old saying I hear pro’s say readers often make the best authors. The other thing here I’m learning from reading published SF is the voices these authors give their characters. I mean most people don’t talk that way. I like to sit on the train and sometimes listen to conversations. To see how people talk. Charles drives a car to work and I think he’s missing the experience if train a train or public transportation. Quite often though on the commute it’s just individuals sitting alone. But when there is a more then one it’s kind of entertaining to hear people talk. This is real life and fiction tends to portray more what the author is interpreting what the character should be saying. Rather then what he wants the characters in the story to say. Lately the books I’m reading the characters all sound like they’re voices from the author and not the characters. Not saying the language isn’t engaging or the story drab and uninteresting if done on the fly or with an outline. I like to write hearing a characters voice. What they sound like or what I think they sound like. Most people don’t sound like a science fiction novel. That’s why I like Robert J Sawyers writing. RJS’s characters sound like real people.I got up around 5:30am to read for a bit and do the cbi thing at about 6:30am. I don’t often do this and I don’t like doing to but I had to give up on Charles’s Stross’s “Accelerando.” I don’t like the point of view the story is in. I’m sure it’s a good read but I also don’t like Cyberpunk. I’m reading Julie E. Czerneda's “A thousand words for a stranger" instead. To get around the dilemma of sifting through what new SF books I'd like to read, is why we have Amazon.com. Amazon gives you (in most cases) a sample peak inside of the writing style. This is 2 books I bought within the last two years that I had to give up because they just read so badly for my taste. I thought I'd give Cyberpunk a try, which is why I bought 3 of his books. I don't like Cyberpunk and I don't think I'm ready for Charles Stross just yet. Sorry Charlie. I think it’s just the use of language not the writing style or story telling but the subject matter is way over my head.
On that note not much going on today. Weather is getting colder. Weather pixie reads +9C but Temps should climb to at least +11 by the time we’re ready to take off out of here. If it holds like this for the weekend, I can live with that. Long rang looks like more of the same until the middle of the month.
It’s back to work on F and maybe I can get another scene completed this afternoon before work. I’ve got 62 scenes remaining and at this rate of 1-2 /day it’s going to take me at least the rest of this month too complete the 2nd rewrite. I really put a lot of effort into my scenes or as much as I possibly can. Spending at least 4-6 hours on one scene/rewrite and if it doesn’t read well or something’s missing I’ll go over it again and again. Every version is an improvement upon the last.
Anyway that’s all for now
