last night I got to thinking about novel writing and outlines. I’m a believer in them. My buddy Charles just gets the idea and some characters and dives right in. I responded to a blog post in J Alan Erwine’s blog as he’s about 10,000 words into a new novel. I used to write the way Charles does but about 50,000 words in, I’d get stuck. I wrote “Ace” and “Rouge” without an outline. I needed to know what the Pros do. So I asked J if he works from an established outline or like Charles just dives in. So far J has yet to answer me but he will. I asked Robert J Sawyer the same question about outlines and he says some Pros outline the way I do and some the way my friend Charles does. RJS just dives write in as well. Charles is in the middle of a 15 Chapter story and it sounds like he’s got about 150K. RJS responded this morning with a link to his story outlines from his website. His outlines are nothing like my outlines. Mine are scene by scene structures showing places and times. I think I’ve got enough going for my next novel “Green Alumni” without going into a full fleshed out outline. I think it slows the writing down. For GA all I need are character sheets. I can straiten out the other stuff later on.
I’m really getting into Julie E. Czerneda’s book and it’s giving me some ideas for another novel idea. It’s a cross over between science fiction and medieval fantasy. The world is a medieval fantasy world with science fiction elements resting under the surface. In other words, the world will be medieval culture but people will be going around with pocket computers high tech weapons talk of other worlds that sort of thing and a few surprises.
well I called Neil and he said he wasn’t going to be going to lodge this evening but he said for me to mark October 18th because there is a MM degree happening. So I’m going to that one as well. So instead tonight I ended up putting my time to productive use. I watched the season opener of the Oiler’s 07-08 hockey game. No score in the first 2 periods. The Sharks scored 1st and the Oiler’s scored right after that (we find later that it was Torres‘s goal.) Then the Oiler’s scored again. With 10 seconds left in the game the Sharks scored to tie. No score in OT. Then the Oiler’s won in the shoot out. Neilson and Stoll. The Oiler’s got 2 points in their5th season opener win in a row. Good stuff. And also, Calgary seems to be losing their opening night. Hehehe. It’s a good night for Oiler fans.
Robert J Sawyer emaild me back again about something else as we were discussing cyberpunk. He said that most cyberpunk is difficult to read. I agree. Anyway I’m glad I stayed home this evening and I saved myself some cash and enjoyed a real entertaining hockey game. Not only this but I can pick up my book today as well.
Speaking of, which I'm in the office at my regular time, 4:30pm for my 5pm shift. Then after that I'm going over to Audrey's and pick up a book and to see if they can order some books I've got in mind. J's "Opium of the people" for one and a few others. I first of all need to see if Audrey's can order them on for me. Then I'll place the order.
Anyway, that's all for now.
