A break from the heat |
|
It was 30 years ago today, Mike & Doris got married. Imagine if I began my writing “career” back then! Home computers were not in widespread use at the time. I think the Commodore Pet computer was the first computer I ever saw in a retail store. That was in 1978. I remember going through The Bay department store with Daryl Lakusta (long gone) and displayed on the main floor was the PET. I went back after work to a take a closer look and the price tag was something like $999. I’m sure The Bay sold a lot of them. The funny thing about that now that I think about it, I had $1,000 a few weeks before I arrived in Edmonton from that UIC claim. Of course I never knew personal home computers were a reality when I was spending that $1000 on a stereo and color TV that I left behind when I decided to stay here. When I first tried writing a novel it was 1985 and I used a typewriter. Today it’s Mike & Doris’s 30th wedding anniversary. I have other memories of course from the later half of 1978 but that one 30 years later seemed to stand out today.
I emailed Doris before I left for work with the idea I’d try and call them when I got home. At work two of the East Indian kids looking over their Blackberry Gmail. One of them, my (Amway connection) let me access my gmail account so I could see what these things look like first hand, I got a reply from Doris and several replies by Markus among others. Those Blackberries are pretty handy. At $15/month for email is a pretty good deal.
Speaking about work last night, we were still doing CF Calgary. The evening was a real disaster. Moe kept on harping about line hour, even for CF. I had $20 by break but I was in a good mood about it. Thinking it’s a bit of a joke. At 7:30pm Moe had sent the whole back 20 home because they were at “0” on their recap. By 8pm we had 6 tap shooters left and that was it for the whole office. I ended up with $100 for the night on the hottest day of the year. Temperature on the Clairview clock going to work was +34C. I heard later it got up to +35C Amazing.
When I left the office last night at 9pm for my train it was windy and slightly overcast. A storm was brewing. I got home before the storm and there was Anne. She was off yesterday and today. At least we have 2/3rds of our September rent covered and all the bills caught up. I tried calling Mike & Doris but they weren’t home so I left a message. I’ll try again tonight or for sure on Sunday. Monday night Raw was pretty good. I’d rate it an 8. Anne made me some sausage rolls and home made fries for lunch.
As for me, the dog days of summer with Xl continue. I’ve been threatening to myself to put my resume in over at Pizza. Anne’s been saying she’s going to try and do this as well as her job is going through some slack time. I’d rather see her there before me so she can give me a “report.” But the Pizza resume goes out this week for sure.
The “good news” is we have a but of a break in our heat wave. It’s +23C out there and temperatures are supposed to drop to something like 18 and 16. There’s some rain in there as well this week but the weekend they are still calling for +27C’s.
Anyway Bloggers, that‘s all for now
