Good times and old friends

A long post today.

It wasn’t that bad out there heading into work yesterday afternoon except for the odd snow flurry. I was able to read some of Icewind dale all the way to the end of the line and back to Corona. I got to the front of the office and Greg was out there saying something how I hurt Lucian’s feelings by calling him a creep or something to that affect when Lucian called me on the phone Tuesday night saying I owe him $20 bucks. Oh brother. I said I’d take care of this and I set Lucian straight when I got upstairs. I got that settled without a mess. DC wasn‘t there. Hey maybe this would be a good night after all. We even had the Oiler game on. I was having a good time sitting with Lev, Shank and I watching the game making sales. DC showed up all friendly with me. The Oiler’s were flying in Columbus. At one point they were up 4-2 in the 2nd period.

About 6:30pm the fire alarm goes off and we all usher out the building. It was a mild seasonal Wednesday evening out there amongst the crowd. The fire department came by and five minutes later we were allowed back inside the building. I noticed heading towards the elevator firemen loitering around an opened door to the optical store on the main level, ahh. Back to the Oiler game at 4-3, 4-4, 5-4 in the last minute of play. Garon in net couldn’t have done any better.

The last half hour I was talking with a customer from my home town in Coquitlam. He was friendly. He talked how he worked at the Columbian Newspaper before it closed down. I said how I was there 10 years before him. Then we got to talking about New Westminster and how a friend of his used to go get all his American Civil War books from the "Three Floor Hobby shop," 3 floors closed down this summer after being in business for 60 years. I said the fellow's name collecting Civil War books wouldn't be Alfred P. would it? He knows Alfred! We started talking about him. It was a great time. He couldn’t say much about Alfred for obvious reasons and it was closing time for me.  I seem to recall now how I played an old SPI quad game, "The Antietam Campaign" on this Saturday night Sunday morning in 1974. He couldn’t let me stay over because he had to get up early or something so I had to walk back home across the Pattula bridge about 2am. I was 21 years old. Hard to believe. I hadn’t seen Alfred since high school. The guy took my name down and said he‘d be talking to Alfred today sometime. I wonder if this Larry fellow/Lawrence is the same guy I played the game with that Saturday night 34 years ago? I took his name and number down for later.

I felt pretty good about leaving out of the office and on my way home. What a night. I read more from my book. 440 pages left then when I got home, I took a can of cat food down to feed Boots our stray friend.

One of the people that works our tap section was saying how her place of employment is looking to hire 50 people for their inbound call center operation. This looks really good. She said they can work their own hours and get paid $15/hour. She’s going to get me a referral card for tomorrow and I’m going to fill it out. Hopefully I can begin their training session next week and if it’s any good I can work from say 12-4pm a few days/week.

After having that talk with Lawrence last night it got me to thinking about my good old school days. I think I entered Coquitlam school district #43 I in the fall of 1958 at Mountain View elementary. I was 6 years old. I recall vividly the Hula Hoop craze. The fad lasted from October 1958 to January 1959. I recall my first day at Mountain view (I started late) with the school yard full of Hula hoop kids. We moved into the house on Regan Ave, I believe it would be the summer of 1958. I recall how I was at Miller Park when JFK was killed Nov 1963 and in 1964 chasing after Linda C.

Inspired by this I took it upon myself to email SD43 asking for a transcript of my years there of what schools I attended and what years. I also asked what would such an invoce cost for this research. The office of SD43 would be getting the email about now. They are an hour behind us. I didn’t complete Grade 12 until 1996 with a diploma challenge program because in 1971 I was 18 and to old to continue high school thanks to my back operation interrupting things. One thing I’d like to do is to confirm all of the schools I attended  and what my marks were.

Anne and I went to bed about 4am this morning and I slept good other then getting up to use the bathroom several times. I slept until about 1:15pm. That’s 9 hours sleep. I barely get that on a Sunday.

So it’s Lodge this evening. Step-up night. I’m looking forward to this. My first night as Tyler. I also think the festive board is free tonight.

Getting back to the US election Tuesday. The good news is it seems that Obama made history more then just being the first black man to become President (which I feel good about) but it also seems that more Americans came out to vote then at any other time in the last 50 years. Also, Obama has a majority in Congress so he can get thing done faster. Bad news for us here in Alberta, it was Obama last June who made a passing reference to Alberta tar sands as “dirty oil.” We’re making attempts here in Alberta to clean up our negative tar sands image with carbon capture technology. Obama didn’t come out and say Alberta specifically or “our neighbor to the North,” but reading between the lines is obvious. Also don’t be surprised to see Obama introduce a National Carbon tax of some kind like what Dion wanted to do here. I also read where about 30% of US foreign oil comes from Canada and Mexico. If Obama introduces this carbon tax it wont go down very well.

If I get that inbound call center job the first couple of weeks is training and it’s 9-4:30. It’ll be a full day for me. If I decide to take the job that is.

The thing is with my current job, I have this feeling that the bottom will be falling out pretty soon thanks in part to this DNC list and when it does tank out I want something to fall back on. A back door. For now, I’m going to try and work this other job (if I get it) Tuesday-Friday and take Sunday/Monday off at my current job. If the job has say a typing speed requirement or a math test pre-requisite, I might have some trouble. I’ll know more about this on Friday.

Anyway Bloggers that’s all for now
