I'm a baby boomer sci-fi
geek with a laptop.

Hello and welcome to my website

Hi, I'm Jim Shannon. This daily Blog-site is about reading the Science fiction-Fantasy, Paranormal genres and how the genre affects my daily life. This site is not content for the masses but the masses are certainly welcomed here. Occasionally I'll rant about the things that make me go WTF? I'll talk about the books I'm reading including graphic novels and comic books. I'll talk about the Science fiction Tv and movies I watch and the podcasts & radio shows and the blogs I follow. Some of my other activities are Freemasonry, The Edmonton Oilers, wrestling, some gaming, music production and some photography. Sure, your going to see spelling errors, grammar errors, the works and I'll try and clean that up when I have time. When I update my blog * I'll post it on Twitter there's a new update. This site isn't about saving the planet or changing the world, I'm just a baby boomer Sci-fi geek with a laptop.
I'm out of here at 9am

I'll get my usual Tim's breakfast head into the office, wait outside for my usual 10 minutes and then have my breakfast take my insulin and start another 6 hours, uggh.

Since I have barely enough to get what I really want from LM I'd be pushing it so I'm going to go and get the Korg SOS and an xlr cable for my audio interface. After that, it's over to BP's to meet with some of my collegaues for a drink and home. I'm not sticking around unless the "entertainment" value has some possibilities otherwise it's home, have a bite to eat pass out and play around with the SOS for awhile and then watch the Oiler game.

Speaking of witch the NHL is still buzzing over Sam Gagner's 8 point night He became the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd star of the  night. That‘s only happened I think once in Oiler history. Mario Lemieux was the last player to get an 8 point night. Gretzky did it twice and Paul Coffee once. To get 8 points in 1 night along with 4 goals is quite the thing and I'm glad it happened to the Oiler's. The bad news is Calgary won 3-1 last night which doesn't do the Oiler's any good in the standings. I wish I could have seen that game but I was at the Lodge, screwing up all over the place. Anyway, that's about all I have for today.

Wednesday, yeesh.

I missed a part about labor to refreshment, which I didn't even know was part of the degree. My bad and I broke the gavel as well. But others were had to be prompted as well.

I got the scores on the hockey game from a brother through out the night and wow, the Oiler's sure do have Chicago's number. Sam Gagnre had 4 goals! The Oiler's won 8-4! Wow, I'm sure the Rexall faithful appreciated the effort and the W.

I was going to mention this from last night but most people around the night, already know about Facebook going public. I use Facebook maybe once a week, if that.

Despite screwing a few things up and my attention drifted when they called me "JW" a couple of times but earlier I did say how if "I tune out its I've been having a bad had cold with some bronchitis." It was fun but I was off my night all while we had somebody from Grand Lodge there and a few guests. I screw up but so did a lot of others as well. Next month is going to be an easy meeting so I'm going to feel a lot better.

Next week, I'm working, Monday 4 hours, Tuesday 8, Wednesday 8, Thursday 8, Friday 7.5, Saturday 6. That's going to be: 41.5 hours.

Coast has had a couple of boring sows this week but tonight is on ancient astronauts, so at least this could be a good show.

Work is has been going slow for me lately. I got $100 in sales all day Wednesday and $45 in sales for half a day yesterday. One of the main things I'm getting is the customer is asking for a website for further information and they can make donations online. I had about 8 of those in a 4 hour shift yesterday. I also get this a lot, "If you send out information, we'll take a look at it." Then my colleagues around me are getting huge sales. At least on this one I'm able to get a few  sales in a shift. On the other one, I've been 2-3 days without a sale. It's time to get out of there and I'd love to get something other then telemarketing. Monday Anne and I are going down to Alberta Works and put our name in. Anyway, that's all for now.

Our cat Sparky hasn't been feeling

well lately and Anne is just salivating over putting the cat down. I suspect her real motive in all of this is because we have 4 cats and she‘s having trouble keeping up with all of the cat litter cleaning. She went and bought this special kind of cat litter that helps keep “dust down.” We take turns feeding them. I feed them in the morning before I  leave and she feeds them during the day. She wants to take Sparky to the vet and I know what the outcome is going to be, put him down so I can spend what little savings I have and she says, “I‘ll pay you back”, yeah right.

Our previous boss had this dog named Gus. A bulldog type of a dog. I liked Gus he was friendly and loved people. My boss would always bring him around in our old office. The dog had trouble with his rectal area over the past few months and the talk in the lunchroom was Gus had died over the weekend. Staff that knew my boss and the dog circulated a card of condolences.

I had a slow typical day on the job. I got line hour for half a day. I didn’t feel all that tired at the end of the day getting home shortly before 10pm.

At least some good news, is, the Oiler’s won this evening and the Flames lost. Anyway, that’s all for now.

I had a nice couple of

days off, although I had planned on going in for Sunday but I was kind of wiped out. I needed the two days off.

The two casualties over the weekend were not having those programs installed and opting out of the Lodge practice. Other then that, I had 2 badly needed days off.

This week, I'm working today 8 hours, same with Wednesday, Thursday 4 hours (Lodge) Friday 8 and Saturday 6 hours.

Monday night Raw was pretty good except the end was a big let down. I don't like how they ended it. It made no sense.

If things go well this week, then there's a 60% chance, I'm buying Cubase 6. Depending on Anne's hours and all for next week. But even if she's got just a few days, I'll pick it up at LM (if it's there) get my programs installed on the weekend and have some fun. Anyway, that's all for now.

The idea was to go in for our last Sunday but I badly need a few days off

Anne and Donna left out of here for church about 5 minutes ago. I called Neil just to let him know that I wouldn’t be at practice, but I know my stuff for the exam and there’s a little I part I have during the FC section but I know my work.

I was supposed to go into work this afternoon but it’s our last Sunday (for now) and I had a long week, so I opted out for this afternoon as we’re supposed to meet Anne for pizza after their trip to West Edmonton Mall. I Haven’t been out there in years.

Tomorrow, I’m going to call LM to see if they have the Korg sos and if they do, I’m going to run down and pick it up. Hopefully tonight after I get back from Pizza Ankit will be able to download the last of those programs and I can begin reinstalling my FL studio etc. I’ve got on my wish list of programs: Moto’s BPM, Machfive 3 and Komplete 8. Hardware, I need an new audio interface and I want NI’s Machine and a better laptop.

I’m closing in on the halfway part of “The Domino Pattern,” (TDP) and I hope to have the book read before the end of this month. I’m going to make a big dent in it today and tomorrow while I play around with the sos of course.

At least the weather is nice. We’re about +4  out there and calling for rain this afternoon. Anyway, that’s all for now

Wednesday I got my laptop back

and I haven't had much of a chance to get into it but I'm sure it's ok. We've got to install a few more programs in the partition before I can begin to download FL Studio, etc.

Other then that, I've been working all week.

This morning when I went in for my morning commute I was surprised to see City Police checking for tickets? Where were ETS police? I learned latter that it's part of a City Police community initiative. Huh?

Yeaa, payday today and a full 8 hour day. When we go back to our regular Monday-Saturday shift February 1st Monday will be from 2-9pm, so in the morning of that day, I'm going to be looking for something else that pays better. Anyway, that's about all for now.

I'm in on the late shift

this afternoon as I didn't sleep very well over night and my cold kept bugging me since Anne put the humidifyer on so I called in and said I'd be ready for the evening shift.

Then this morning I had this notion about my laptop being exposed to those that I don't get along with in the office that might tamper with it but then the guy that reformated it would keep it in his nap sack anyway (I hope). Then i got to thinking that my original Acer had my wifi settings set properly and would the new hard drive reformating take out my wifi? I think I  had 802.11g or something like that. Would that be gone?

As good as "A game of thrones" is, I didn't want to burn myself out so I decided to read something lighter. I went with Timothy Zahn's "The Domino pattern" book #4 in the Frank Compton series. I like this series. Book #5 is supposed to be out later this year, so I'll get to that latter.

Next week at the Lodge, I've got a lot on my plate: As JW I have to help open the Lodge, and then we have a candidate that's about to proove up so I'm doing the oral exam. I'm bringing in some hot food (something we haven't had in the last couple of years) plus we're having crib night so it's going to be busy, but I have a week to prepare.

I didn't know this before about earths Moon but apparently it's moving 1.5 inches away from the earth every year according to a show I watched on the "Discovery channel" last night. Nasa beams a laser light to a suitcase like receiver and the light transmited back gives the information about the Moon's position.

Sorry for any typos this afternoon. I compose this in the editor window and there's no spell checker unlike Blogger. Anyway, that's about all for now.

No laptop

so far today but I think I'll have it Tuesday night.

I'm just about ready to wrap up "A game of thrones." and I'm ready to begin book #2.

My wife went to the Clairview medi centre earlier (something I should) and they gave her some kind of pills to take. The Doctor told her she had bronchitus. That's probably what I have and if I don't get any better, then I'll be heading there as well.

This kind of old news but according to Science fiction today, George Lucas said he is retiering from making blockbuster films. That's kind of sad because I'd like to see another trilogy of the main original chracters (those still alive) as a kind of a last hurrah adventure. I'm sure Lucas has thought about this before but how many of the origional actors at their age would agree to do it? < Anyway, here's a link to the story.

This week I want to go hard and put in a full 38 hours as I want to save up some funds for that Korg SOS. That's my next project, anyway, that's about all for now.

I had a great afternoon

on the job yesterday but got nothing last night, except my check and I was glad to get out of there to my bank and home. This morning, I'm heading into Tim's get some breakfast and I've got another 6 hours ahead of me. If I get my laptop today then I just might go ahad and get something at LM if not then it's straight home. At least I've got the Oiler game to look forward to this evening.

I found this interesting story in i09 this  morning: The most interesting mathematical mistake in the solar system Johann Elert Bode is the author of Bode's Law, one of the most contentious laws in astronomy. It's a ridiculous idea which juggles numbers, seemingly for no reason, and it ends up revealing the spacing of the planets in the solar system. Or does it? < You can read the rest of the story here.

"A game of thrones" is progressing nicely as I'm just about ready to wrap this book up hopefully over the weekend. I don't know if I want to begin book #2 right away. I started reading this beast September 26th. Over 3.5 months! but its my official first book read for the year. Anyway, that's about all for now.

I had a Ok afternoon yesterday

but in the evening I had a fantastic night. My best day ever since we came over to the new office.

I called LM yesterday morning befoe I left out of here and yes they have K8 I might end up getting it regardless after work on Saturday and head over to Wendy's for a burger or somethng.

After work I went to catch the #5 bus after a wait and I needed to use the bathroom bad. I got to my bank to take out $20 and to check my balance so I'll have enough to get K8 if I decide to get it. Keith wasn't feeling well so I doubt he did anything to my laptop I'll probably get it back on the weekend, we'll see.

Well the Oiler's dropped another one last night in St louis. It was a 1-0 Sl win so the Oiler's just before the Allstar break have 38 points 7 points ahead of lowly CBJ. The way things are going this season the Oiler's could be in last place again as I think that's the direction they are headed, again.

Seems some Ipad customers pulled a prank at Future shop, best Buy and London drug stores over the Christmas holidays and took out the Ipads and stuffed th boxes with clay. I got the link from i09. It's cute story but for some reason escaped my attention. < so here's the link to the story .

I don't ordinaraly watch US politics but this year I'm looking over my shoulder. On one hand I'd like to see Obama get in because he could be the only thing that stands between SOPA yet I'd also like to see the Republicans get in because they'd put the Keystone pipeline through. They don't want our oil heading to China. Anyway, that's about all for now.

So when

I left the apartment and it was -30 with a -40 windchill but surprisingly it wasn't all that bad out there heading into the office or even coming home.

I had a better day of it today and I tried a few things from my co-workers. The best part of it was I stayed in it for the full day. Also, our Sunday shift was canceled as of the end of this month and we're back doing Mondays again which is ok by me except I'm going to negotiate having Mondays off unless its Lodge night other wise, this gives me 37.5 hours also changed and back is Friday's we're off at 8:30am again. So if this works in my favor, I'll have Saturday nights off Sunday and Monday (unless it's Lodge night of course)

The other thing is my hard drive will have to be completely reformatted. This means no factory default They're going to install Win 7 and I get MS Office and that's it! I get a bare bones system. I'll have to reinstall all my programs etc but I have a lot of stuff backed up I can reload, like a lot of photos etc and I get my wifi back so I can transfer a lot of things between my desktop and laptop if I have to. I'll have to reinstall I tunes FL Studio etc.

Just as I'm getting a little better Anne has to get the flu. Nice. But I still  have last weeks check and next weeks and the 27th so that's 2/3rds of February's rent right there. Hopefully all Anne has is the 24 hour flu and she'll be up and about in a few days me, I'm feeling a lot better. Now there's another item I need in order to have my laptop restored: My laptop power cord. I've got that ready to go for the morning. If all goes well, I should have my laptop fully ready to go Friday night. Saturday after work, I'm going out to buy (if they have it in stock) at LM Komplete 8. If Kontakt 5 has everything in Kontakt 4, that and FL Studio is all I'll ever need. In theory. Anyway, that's all for now.

We're going to get

down to -31 at noon tomorrow! It hasn't been this cold all season. Even all of last year.

If all goes well I should have my laptop up and running by this time tomorrow. If I'm having a decent week I might even Wednesday morning, go down to LM and buy Komplete 8. I'll get the laptop in the fall.

I'm making some good gains in the book I'm currently reading and if all goes well, I hope to have my first book read by the end of this month. I dont know if I want to go on to the series right away with book 2 but the series is fun to read So, I think right on the heals of this, I'll get into book 2.

Monday night Raw wasn't bad. On a scale of 1-10, I'd rate it a 7.5 At least the show is getting some better wrestlers and some older ones returning.

As far as my cold goes, my cough has been raspy but less episodes of it. This has got to be the worst cold I've ever had in my life and I hope I nver get anything like this again. If it doesn't clear up by Saturday night, I'm heading to the medi centre. Anyway, that's all for now.

My voice is so raspy from this cold

I can't seem to shake. I went into the office only one this week and that was for 4 hours but today, I'm going to try for 6.

Not a lot going on right now despite my cold and my laptop woes. I'm bringing my laptop into the office this morning and my back up hard drive to see if one of our tech people that helps me out occasionaly can restore my last Win7 session. I don't want to have to go back in and reinstall all of my programs and VST's. Maybe the guys can do a few simple key strokes and ten minues latter its done and I can take it home. Would be nice to have wifi working again on my Itouch.

With the dismail loss the Oiler's took last night at Rexall place, I'm in no hurry to get home on Sunday night and watch another "effort."

I made another Goodreads update on "A game of thrones." I'm tried of reading long books that take me months to read and I've got enough books here I've been "stocking up" on my shelves to last me awhile now. I also want to get back to Karen Traviss's City of pearl series and work n book 3. That's probably my next read. Anyway, that's about all for now.

If you have been following me

on Twitter recently you'd know I've had a rough week what with this cold returning and being locked out of my laptop. That was my own mistake. I thought Linux wasn't in the New Volume partition and I don't think it was until when I rebooted the laptop to get the grub recovery command line. I can't even reboot to Windows because I don't have a Windows recovery Cd. I read where as of 2007 Acer stopped the practice of not including a back up Cd. But you could build one. Fortunately I did a Windows back up of my C drive awhile back. When I'm at work today, I'm going to enquier about it and what my options are.

Some interesting things about cell phones lately and 911 calls. Seems that a huge majority of the 911 calls operators have been receiving are "pocket calls" from cell phones. These are cell phone users that don't have their phnes locked. The Blackberrys (phones) are the main offenders here because of the 911 feature button on the phone. It ties up a lot of resources as well because thes misdialed calls have to be called back compromising the service. I don't know what the answer is short of locking up that feature or have the service provider charge the user an additional fee for miss use;

Anne suggested that if I cant do a whole day tomorrow, do a half a day. one of the guys from my Lodge emailed me an invitation to go out to Wetaskiwin Lodge but I can;t justify the hours and I don;t know what time i'd be back. I doubt it would be before 11pm. Anyway, sorry for any misspells here. That's all for now.

Today, I almost went out and bought a

new laptop, for 90% music production a little bit of Blogging and YouTube and email. I didn't get out of bed until 1pm and I wasn't quite sure what exactly I wanted. The new laptop has to be quad cor, at least an i5, 15" screen, 6-8 Ram and a minimum of 750 Gb hard drive for around $700-800. That's the price point. I saw a few candidates at Best Buy and I was ready to go but Anne pointed out that we hadn't received our GST check yet even though it was mailed Thursday. The other thing is my job isn't in the same condition as it was last year. So, it was those two factors that prevented me from heading out this afternoon.

Monday night Raw wasn't bad. On a scale of 1-10 I'd rate it a 6. it had its moments but I don't know what all of this Chris Jerhico story line is all about?

One good thing though about the job and the new company name, is we might not have to do OTH all the time but I'd take OTH over the things we're doing now. I'm lucky if I can get a sale once a shift. Being a tap shooter, even on a TD run, I'm used to 6-8 sales an hour and at least $25-$50 a week in bonuses.

Yesterday while trying to delete a "New Volume" partition on my C Drive to gain extra space I had taken out Linux Ubuntu. That ordinaraly would have been a good thing but by deleting Linux without a prompt brought up this thing called Grub recovery. I'm sure My Windows stuff is ok its just that I can't get to it. So I've got to ask one of the "East Indian kids" for some advice see if I can get some verbal insructions. Anyway, that's all for now.
